On Friday 4th April, a team was selected from Y6 Kingfisher class to represent Upwell Academy at the Downham Market Schools Cluster Football tournament at Hillcrest Primary school.

Upwell got off to a cracking start by scoring quickly courtesy of the energetic Jayden and were unfortunate to concede two late goals with all players putting in a sterling performance. The second game saw Upwell working exceptionally well as a team against an organised Denver opposition with a one-zero loss with the force that is the talented Freddie having a sensational game in goal. Up next, a strong team from Nelson Academy forced Upwell to dig deep in their own half with outstanding organised performances from the defensive duo of Amelia and Scarlet, whilst in midfield the determined Aubre Humphrey was awesome and ran her heart out, constantly chasing down any opposition player that had the ball.

After a rousing team talk from the effervescent Captain Jayden, Upwell looked confident, fresh and grabbed any opportunity they could to press a very physical Denver Albion, resulting in a two-nil deficit. Louie absolutely ran his socks off with brave Henry battling on despite an injury in midfield, whilst the impressive Olive took on the biggest opposition player she could find with absolutely no fear shown whatsoever. The best match by far was the last of the day against the hosts, Hillcrest Harriers, with some excellent football on both sides. It was a pleasure to watch the speedy Louie score a great technical goal set up by the alert Jayden on the left wing and Hillcrest responded with two quick, well-executed goals.

Upwell never let their heads drop at any point and showed excellent sportsmanship and professionalism alongside 100% commitment and outstanding teamwork.

A very well done you made the school very proud, and certificates are in the post !! Upwell have been commended for an extra award for 'save of the tournament' and the referee also commented on their well-taken throw-ins.

Thank you to Mrs Marsters and Mrs Keirman for supporting the team!
