Year R  

In Teddy Class this week we had a visit from a big, famous bunny – Peter Burrow. He joined our assembly then came and danced the with us. He even gave Mrs Fisher a high five, we were all very excited. In maths we have been recognising, making, writing and making 4. In English we have continued to create a story map for the story ‘Whatever Next!’ and this week we have innovated the story to create our own version, changing Baby Bear to a Hoglet and the moon to Mars. In art, we have created our own class version of Van Gogh’s ‘A Starry Night’ using chalk and some of us created our own versions using oil pastels. During our phonics sessions we have learnt ‘c’ - curl around the caterpillar, ‘k’ - down the kangaroo’s body, curly tail and kick and ‘u’ - down and under the umbrella, up to the top and draw the puddle. What a busy week! 

  

Year 1 

We had an exciting start to the week with a visit from Peterborough United FC’s mascot, Peter Burrow! The children loved meeting him and seeing his dance moves.  

In PE this week we looked at throwing for distance and throwing for accuracy. We practised 3 different types of throws, the push throw, pull throw and underarm throw. In English, we have continued looking at the story We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. This week we explored prepositions in the story such as over, under and through. We also explored onomatopoeias. These are words that imitate a noise. We came up with our own for lots of different things such as fireworks, cars, instruments and animals. This week in Maths we looked at the plus and equals sign. We have been using a scale to help us understand that both sides of the equals sign need to be the same. So if there is 10 on one side and 9 on the other, we will need add another 1 to make them equal. In History we thought about some of the decisions we would make if we were Prime Minister. Some of our ideas were that children would be in charge at school, people who worked hard would get lots of money and that everybody would have a house. 

 

Year 2

It has been yet another busy week in Richard Long Class. We have been securing our number bonds to 10, and learning them to 20 and 100 in maths. We have stated a new text ‘The Man on the Moon’ to support our Diary writing in English, which the children have really enjoyed, the main character sent us a short video to inspire our writing, I will share this on Dojo too. We have been working on conjunctions this week and using them to extend our sentences. In science we have been exploring the Sun and we all created our own sun catchers which will be sent home in a week or so.  

Please remember, spellings need to be learnt weekly at home, that there will be a weekly challenge on Sumdog and that an activity needs to be completed from the homework grid. It is also vital that the children continue to read daily at home to improve their pace, fluency, and vocabulary so that they are ready for the increasing amount of reading that happens across the curriculum as they move up through the school and to move up our Class Reading at Home Mountain, to get dojos and for the chance to win a reading reward.

Year 3 

It has been yet another busy week in Year 3. We have been adding and subtracting ones and tens to numbers in maths. We have continued to read and discuss a range of Ancient Greek Myths in English, which the children have really enjoyed. We have been working on conjunctions this week and we became such experts that we were even experimenting with using conjunctions to put a subordinate clause at the beginning of a sentence. In science we have been exploring the water cycle and we sang a song to help us to remember the process of evaporation, condensation and precipitation.  

Don’t forget that spellings need to be learnt weekly at home, that there will be a weekly challenge on Sumdog and that an activity needs to be completed from the homework grid. It is also vital that the children continue to read daily at home to improve their pace, fluency and vocabulary so that they are ready for the increasing amount of reading that happens across the curriculum as they move up through the school. 

 

Year 4 

Hooray we're back in the classroom! With a lovely new carpet too. 

In English we have been thinking about why Macbeth acted as he did. We discussed our ideas and then wrote about our opinions, using the story to help us. In Maths we have been finding the perimeters of shapes: measuring them and counting squares on a grid.  

Peter Borough Rabbit came to see us on Tuesday. He was very funny in assembly and he did the floss.  

We had our second week of recorders. We learnt how to play A and B notes.  

In science we have been learning how to classify vertebrates ready for our school visit on Tuesday. 

Today we have voted for our school council members - but don't know who they are yet! 

 

Year 5 

As October is Black History Month, we have been learning all about Ruby Bridges in our Guided Reading sessions and the struggles that she went through as a young girl going to school in America. 

In English, we have moved on from Aboriginal Dreamtime stories to Māori myths and legends which then links nicely to our topic of New Zealand in Geography. In Science, we have started our work on the Respiratory System in science and are hoping to make our own mini-models of the lungs next week! 

Year 5 were also very excited to have a special guest earlier in the week! Peterborough United visited along with their mascot and were very generous in handing out tickets to one of their games!  

Don't forget to keep up your spelling and times tables practice this week, as well as reading at home. I would love to see some uploads on Dojo of your bingo homework board activities too! 

 

Year 6 

We started this week off with a special visitor in school. Peter Burrow came in with a coach from Peterborough FC and the children had a great time meeting him and some children who have had ACE Behaviour were lucky enough to have a special training session with them. Each child even received some free tickets to attend an upcoming match! Thank you very much Peter Burrow! 

In Maths, the children have been working hard on their written methods for multiplication. They have shown great resilience especially with long multiplication. In English, we have continued our work on Around the World in Eighty Days, we have been studying one chapter in depth ready to write our own modern innovation next week. In Science, we have started our own class experiment, investigating the effect of different liquids on an iron nail, observing the amount of Iron Oxide (rust).

Next week, we are starting our Head Boy & Head Girl preparations, so if you would like to start planning some ideas for your speech at home that would be great.
